Precise Clinical Procedure & Frequency Rules

1. Preparation: Dissolve 1g of roasted Phulla Phitkari in 200ml of warm water until crystals dissolve completely.

2. Contact Time: Dip a clean cotton swab into the solution and gently press against the aphthous ulcer for exactly 20 to 30 seconds. It will produce a temporary stinging sensation as proteins coagulate.

3. Thorough Rinse: Immediately rinse and gargle with plain warm water. SPIT OUT THOROUGHLY — DO NOT SWALLOW!

4. Max Duration: Use once or twice daily for a maximum of 2 to 3 days only. Discontinue as soon as the ulcer heals.

CRITICAL SAFETY DIRECTIVE: NEVER SWALLOW PHITKARI WATER

Potassium Alum is an inorganic mineral salt (*Saurashtri* in Ayurveda) intended strictly for external and topical wash purposes. Ingestion of concentrated alum causes severe gastrointestinal ulceration, acute nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and renal irritation.

Always spit out completely and keep all alum solutions out of reach of children.

Ayurvedic Sphatika (Alum) Shodhana

In Ayurvedic Rasashastra, Alum is designated as Sphatika or Saurashtri. Classical texts strictly prohibit using unpurified raw rock alum inside the mouth without Shodhana (purification):

  • The Phulla Tawa Roast: Raw alum crystal is placed on a hot dry iron skillet. As heat rises, it melts into liquid, bubbles vigorously, and dries into a snowy white, light puffed cake (Sphatika Bhasma).
  • Kashaya & Stambhana: Pure astringent property that arrests bleeding (Raktastambhana) and heals septic ulcers (Vranaropana).

Biochemistry of Protein Coagulation

Potassium aluminum sulfate [KAl(SO4)2·12H2O] acts through rapid electrostatic protein precipitation:

Vascular Constriction: Trivalent aluminum cations bind to negatively charged carboxyl groups of albumin and globulin in blood, forming an insoluble gelatinous clot within 15 seconds.

Enamel Erosion Warning: Alum solutions have an acidic pH (approx. 3.0–3.5). Chronic daily gargling can demineralize tooth enamel. Never use as an everyday mouthwash; limit to acute 2–3 day episodic triage.

Frequently Asked Questions (Clinical & Practical)

Can Phitkari be used as an aftershave?

Yes, barbers have used solid alum blocks for over a century. Wetting a smooth potassium alum crystal block and gliding it across freshly shaved facial skin immediately stops micro-bleeding from razor nicks, closes pores, and prevents folliculitis (razor bumps). Always rinse face with cool water after 60 seconds.

Is Phitkari safe for treating acne and pimples?

Mild alum water (0.5% concentration) can be dabbed onto active pus pimples with a cotton swab for 30 seconds to dry out excess sebum and kill bacterial pathogens. However, applying raw concentrated crystal or leaving it overnight can cause severe skin peeling, redness, and hyperpigmentation.

Can pregnant women or children use Phitkari mouth rinses?

Children under 12 years old should NOT use phitkari mouth rinses due to the risk of accidental swallowing. Pregnant women may use mild external topical applications, but must avoid oral use unless supervised by a healthcare provider.
